Politicians and Social Media: A Match Made in Heaven?

Tags: , , — Filed under: Media and Social Media — Roy Temple @ 6:19 am

Here’s an interesting piece that discusses how local politicians are using social media to interact directly with their voters and sometimes bypassing the media filter.

Politicians are figuring out what social media technologies like blogs, Facebook, MySpace and Twitter have to offer: direct access to voters. More than ever before, they can bypass the professional press and deliver an uncensored, unfiltered — and unchecked — message.

The piece singles out Mayor Francis Slay of St. Louis and Mayor R.T. Ryback of Minneapolis.

Obviously, Governor Sarah Palin and Senator Claire McCaskill have figured this out as well.

The story also quotes St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporters Tony Messenger and Jake Wagman, both prolific Twitterers in their own right.

Note: If anyone knows what Twitter account Governor Palin is using since leaving the Governor’s office, drop it into the comments and we’ll add the link to the post.
